ABOUT THE WORK
Through vibrant colour, energetic mark-making, and layered collage, Vanessa White’s new exhibition explores the relationship between spontaneous gesture and deliberate composition. These abstract paintings evolve through cutting, rearranging, and reworking, creating dynamic compositions that shift between clarity and ambiguity. White is an award-winning Melbourne artist whose work is held in major public collections and has been presented at institutions including the Adelaide Festival Centre and Akureyri Art Museum, Iceland.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Vanessa White is a Melbourne-based visual artist whose practice spans painting and moving-image practices. With over three decades of experience in the arts, she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts and a Master of Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts.
White’s abstract paintings explore the relationship between gesture and structure through vibrant colour, layered surfaces, and a process of collage, editing, and revision. Her work balances instinctive mark-making with deliberate composition, creating dynamic fields that invite sustained looking and multiple interpretations. Alongside painting, she has developed an extensive body of moving-image work exhibited and screened nationally and internationally.
Her work has been recognised through an Australia Council Grant, residencies at Bundanon, Hill End, Firstdraft, and SÍM Iceland, the NG Creative Art Residency Prize France, and finalist selections in the Portia Geach Memorial Award, Blake Prize, Hornsby Art Prize, Percival Portrait Prize, Lismore Regional Gallery Portrait Prize, and the Whyalla Art Prize. Her video works have also received international awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Dance Short Film.
White’s work has been exhibited, screened, and commissioned by institutions including the Adelaide Festival Centre, Ottawa Arts Centre Canada, Akureyri Art Museum Iceland, the Glass Museum Denmark, Košice Art Museum Slovakia, and the Norton Museum of Art USA. Her work is held in the collections of Artbank, La Trobe Regional Gallery, the City of Yarra, and Box Hill Institute.
